According to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 7 million children ages 5-14 spend time unsupervised every day after school. The Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos aims to reduce that number by providing children in the community with a fun and positive place to spend the crucial hours between 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm where there is no supervision at home. With trained youth development professionals to lead comprehensive after-school programs, the Club provides its youth members with the tools they need to strive for academic success, develop leadership qualities, and learn life skills through engaging programs and activities.
With thirteen sites across the San Marcos community, the San Elijo Middle School, as well as, our newer site at Double Peak Middle School, offers programs and activities that provide opportunities for our youth members to succeed academically, while developing self-confidence and inspiring curiosity.
Homework hour is a crucial part of the after-school program. Youth members are encouraged to use the time to work on homework or projects for school, while trained staff is available to provide assistance and support.
Youth members are able to participate in hands-on activities with our Specialty Club programming that can change from year to year. They can learn how to cook a variety of dishes or snacks, while learning measurement systems, cooking temperatures, and proper sanitary food handling techniques. The Chess Club is a great way for young, seasoned chess players teach their peers the rules of the game and strategies to overcome an opponent.
One of the newer Clubs is the Dance team. A favorite among many of our youth members, the instructor led Club is now being offered at San Elijo Middle School after school. We also offer the photographer or designer the opportunity to participate in the Yearbook Club. Youth members are able to learn techniques and get experience in taking great photos then transferring those to computer programs to design and layout a “yearbook.”
Our sports leagues are also a favorite among our youth members. Staff works with youths to not only play organized football and basketball, but learn the rules and history of each sport, as well as, different plays and positions in a game. Our kids are able to “coach” by calling plays and learning to set up plays on the court or field. These activities are a wonderful way to develop a positive self-esteem, leadership skills and encourage teamwork qualities in our youth members.
The San Elijo Middle School site also encourages parents and families of our Youth Members to join them in attending Potluck events, Holiday parties, and Showcases of the youth’s accomplishments throughout the year; even sample a dish from a chef!
With an affordable annual membership and weekly rates, the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos strives to make after-school programs available to families of all backgrounds. Call (760) 471-2490 today to enroll your child!
