San Elijo Middle School (SEMS) Rising Stars is presenting Beauty and the Beast, March 16-19, 2017, in the Performing Arts Center at San Elijo Middle School.
SEMS Rising Stars is an after-school performing arts program that is open to students with or without previous theatre experience. Under the direction of artistic director, Danielle Levas, and assistant director Susie Dycus, over 70 students will participate in the live musical production of Beauty and the Beast. Over a dozen students will work as backstage crew with creative director and SEMS teacher Lori Davis.
“It’s a privilege learning from our director, Ms. Levas,” said Nina P. “The production is an exciting, fun and rewarding experience for me. My favorite part is Act 1-Home because it allows me to express my character Belle’s deep emotions.”
“Studies show that students involved in the arts gain academic and life skills,” said Patricia Kurylo, assistant principal at SEMS. “I’m so proud we can continue to provide performing arts opportunities for our students, especially knowing it enhances their academic experience at SEMS.”
Beauty and the Beast is a classic 18th century French fairy tale. While there have been many variations over the years, the most recognized adaptation in the United States is the animated Disney film released in 1991. Adapted from the Broadway theater production, this family-friendly musical production teaches transformation and tolerance while entertaining the audience with such beloved songs as Beauty and the Beast, Something There, and Be Our Guest.
A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the door; however, advance purchase is strongly encouraged as the event is expected to sell out.
