This is the second time these three young women have graced the cover of SHARE. Why? Because every June, they host Carnival for Cancer right here in our backyard to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. And, it’s pretty awesome when you find out they are sisters and that they do all of this on their own. We hope reading their story not only inspires you to donate, but to stop by and support their event – something that has grown organically over the last four years. There is no better way to kick off summer in San Elijo Hills than supporting a team of young women who have built a neighborhood tradition from scratch – all in the name of giving.
Whatever you are doing on Saturday, June 10, plan on stopping by the 4th Annual Carnival for Cancer hosted by the Kascoutas girls who live in San Elijo Hills. There is nothing more magical than watching children, ideas and causes grow over time and this event is one of those things.
In 2013, Samantha Kascoutas, who was only 10 at the time, approached us about an event she had planned – Carnival for Cancer. It was pretty cute to see her determination. She was committed to raising funds for the American Cancer Society and she created all of her own carnival games and solicited donations and support from local businesses. Then, she set it all up at Questhaven Park and invited all of her friends and neighbors.
Little did we know that this event would not only be a huge success raising about $1200, but that it would also because a tradition. Each year, it gets bigger and better. It has also grown over the years to include Samantha’s two older sisters, Courtney and Melanie. And over the last 3 years, they have been able to raise about $10,000 for the American Cancer Society! Not bad, for three sisters right from their backyard.
Their goal this year is to raise $5,000 and with your support, they can totally do it.
Carnival for Cancer will be held on Saturday, June 10 from 9:30AM to 1:30PM at Questhaven Park (off of San Elijo Rd.). There will be about 10 carnival games, a bake sale, raffle, candy mine and more. You can enjoy pulled pork sandwiches and play games all for a fantastic cause. When you check-in, grab some tickets for food and games and then enjoy all of the fun! Proceeds will go to Relay For Life with The American Cancer Society for cancer research.
If you’ve ever coordinated an event, you know all of the planning and organization that goes into it. These three ladies have learned over the years how to put on a great event – coordinating volunteers and activities – even while juggling full schedules. You will be impressed!
What do these young women do when they are not raising funds for cancer research?
Today, Samantha is in her final weeks of middle school where she has been active with ASB and also loves playing the guitar. Courtney is currently a sophomore at San Marcos High where she runs cross country and long distance track. She also participates in Circle of Friends – a buddy system at SMHS to support students that have special needs. Melanie is a senior at SMHS where she has just wrapped up a bunch of AP classes, cross country & track and has been President of the Unicef Club. She is getting ready to head off to college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study chemistry this fall.
Let’s help the Kascoutas reach their goal. Mark your calendars and join the fun on June 10. If you’d like to donate something for the event or volunteer, please email the girls at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also follow them on Instagram or Facebook. Or donate directly to their Relay for Life team here.
A big thank you to Samantha, Courtney and Melanie for working together to raise awareness and funds for a great cause. We applaud your effort and thank you for stepping up to make a difference!
