A Place to Gather, Give Back & Create
Charity Wings Arts Center opened its doors in April 2013 right here in San Marcos across from CSUSM, but you probably won’t fully appreciate or understand it until you get over there and participate in something! It doesn’t matter whether you’re crafty or not, whether you’re young or old – there is something for everyone at this art and events center.
August is the perfect month to get out and explore. So, if you’ve run out of ideas of things to do with the kids or you just need a break for yourself to get out and create something – this is the place to do it and now is the time.
It’s a pretty amazing place.
The 6,000 square foot warehouse houses an endless supply of art supplies. All neatly organized, you’ll find an area for clay and ceramics, an area for sewing and embroidery, woodworking, metal smithing, jewelry-making, beads and mixed media, fabric and yarn. You’ll find countless stamps, beads, paints, mat cutters, die cutters, a light table, and truly, just about anything you could possibly need to create something. The center offers open studio hours where you can just come in and use anything you like for a small fee. Which is great because you can just use what you need without wasting supplies and you can spread out in an area made for creating – rather than trying to do it at home.
Charity Wings Arts Center also hosts a variety of classes and activities – from wine & painting nights guided by an artist to “I Craft. You Craft. We all Craft” events where children work on a project in one area while their accompanying adult works on an adult craft in another area. Just check their calendar online for upcoming schedule.
The Arts Center also makes a great place for birthday parties, showers, and other special events. For example, local business owner, Carol Farrar is hosting her anniversary party for 1850 Realty there this month. “I wanted our anniversary event to be something that gives back and hosting it at Charity Wings was a perfect way to do that,” Carol shared.
They also have 10’ x 9’ spaces for rent on an ongoing basis. One resident uses his space for his woodworking projects. Having the space at Charity Wings gives him a place to go to work on his projects and to get out of the house. He can leave his projects set up and come back to them later.
All of the supplies you find at Charity Wings Art Center have been donated and it’s pretty amazing to see all of it. In fact, they always have an area with surplus supplies that they donate to teachers. Teachers can just come by and pick up what they need.
The Charity Wings Art & Craft Center provides free art classes and events for other non-profit organizations both onsite and online, offering their beneficiaries an outlet for creative expression, as well as the hope and healing that only art can provide.
They also offer memberships for community members and this is how they keep the center going. You can become a Charity Wing Art & Craft Center Supporter for as little as $10/month. And, it’s pretty cool because open studio hours include access and use of all of the art supplies! Check their site for various membership levels and benefits.
You don’t have to be a member to be a supporter, though. In fact, there are LOTS of ways to participate and support the Art Center and their work:
You can make a cash donation to the 501c3 right on their website at http://www.charitywings.org/donate/
What a great way to give back while enjoying the hobbies that you love. Volunteers are needed to manage various departments, to design, attend events, etc. http://www.charitywings.org/volunteer/
Lend a Green Thumb
If you love gardening, you’ll love the Community Food & Art Garden vision there at the Art Center. Sponsor a garden bed or just help them establish and grow the garden.
Have a talent to share with others? This may be the place for you to teach that craft or technique.
Charity Wings Arts Center is a great asset for our community and a wonderful place to gather, give back and create. But, don’t take our word for it. Get out and explore for yourself. Next time you take on a new craft or art project, host an event, or organize a creative birthday party, think of Charity Wings Arts Center.
