The San Elijo Hills Foundation has been working on a variety of projects over the last few months.
As a non-profit tasked with a mission to support and enhance projects that improve the quality of life within San Elijo Hills, we are excited to share some of the results of our most recent collaborations.
Basketball Courts Now Accessible
The San Elijo Hills Foundation was successful in bringing together the City of San Marcos Parks & Recreation as well as the administration at San Elijo Middle School to provide community access to the basketball courts on campus any time after 5PM on Friday through the entire weekend. This access will also be extended during long breaks like summer vacation. We are excited to have been able to facilitate this collaboration. Access to the basketball courts is a fantastic community asset and we can’t wait to see you out on the courts.
Odyssey of the Mind World Finals
Once again, San Elijo Hills will be represented at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals tournament to be held at Iowa State University on May 25-28, 2016! The San Elijo Hills Foundation sponsored two teams again this year from here in our community.
At Regionals, our Division I team, composed of students from SEES finished 3rd place in their competition. They were against 8 other teams, and we are very proud of their performance particularly because this was their first time in the Odyssey program.
Our Division II team, composed of the same ladies as last year (who are now at SEMS) finished 1st place and then advanced to the State competition where they took first place again and earned a spot at the World Finals.
OotM is a “creative competition.” The kids are tasked with putting together an 8 minute skit completely by themselves. After months of hard work, they enter their skit in tournaments and compete against other teams from the region, state and possibly the nation and world. The program focuses on creativity, teamwork, project management and decision making.
This year, the girls moved up to Division II where they competed against other 6-8th graders. Last year at the World Finals, the kids came in 8th place among nearly 70 teams, and this year, they are hoping to repeat their strong finish to the season. They are off to a fantastic start. In the Regional competition, held on March 12 in Encinitas, they came in First Place in their Problem and Division. Next, in the State tournament, held on April 2 at UC Riverside, they repeated their success and tied for First Place, earning an invitation to the World Finals.
Our team will represent San Elijo Hills and California on an International stage where over 800 teams from around the world will showcase their creative solutions to the Odyssey problems.
The kids worked really hard this year on their Odyssey project. We couldn’t be more proud of them!
Last year, the cost of the trip was over $10,000, and thanks to your generous donations, they went a long way towards the costs of housing, freight-shipping of the props and flights. We hope we can count on your support again to show the world that creativity and talent are thriving in the Hills of San Elijo!
There is a GoFundMe campaign set up to help raise funds for the big day. Please consider making a donation to help support these students. You will find all of the details at: https://www.gofundme.com/bkxk64qc
