San Elijo Hills Women’s Club – December 2016

November 29, 2016 By Karen Friend Smith

Check for $17,000 Presented to Straight from the Heart

Martha Tavares, Straight from the Heart (SFTH) Board member gratefully accepted a check for the proceeds of SEHWC’s Hoedown in the Hills for $17,000 from Trish Goldman, president of San Elijo Hills Women’s Club, at the club’s November 8 meeting . Also on hand at the presentation, was Nicolas Jonville of The Jonville Team, the event’s Benefactor sponsor. Straight from the Heart, a 501c3 non-profit that supports foster children throughout San Diego County and their families, is a major SEHWC charity and greatly depends on the support of local philanthropic groups and corporate support.

November Meeting Shines Spotlight on Women’s Empowerment

Also at the November meeting, Paige Bradley, Executive Director of Women’s Empowerment International (WE), shared her organization’s bold vision for expanding its impact in San Diego as well as internationally, including WE’s exciting new program in Haiti, a country currently struggling to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew.

Women’s Empowerment is a non-profit dedicated to eliminating extreme poverty around the world. WE, a San Diego-based charity, was  founded by local women committed to helping women and children out of poverty, not only in our community but throughout the world. Through donations, SEHWC participates in WE’s mission to reduce poverty by providing micro loans and social support to motivated women who work tirelessly to improve their lives, thereby strengthening their families and communities.

Fall Holiday Boutique

On Saturday, November 19, holiday shoppers in a festive mood enjoyed delicious home-baked goods and sipped on fragrant coffee as they explored many wonderful gift offerings provided by a variety of vendors. The Holiday Boutique, jointly sponsored by the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club and the City of San Marcos, is held at the San Elijo Hills Recreation Center and is an annual and much anticipated event for those who want to get into the holiday spirit and accomplish some holiday shopping close to home. SEHWC’s proceeds from this event fund a scholarship for a deserving San Marcos High School graduating senior.

Santa’s Elves Offer Willing Assistance

San Elijo Hills Women’s Club members are busy volunteers during the holiday season. Several community organizations deliver toy donations directly to Straight From The Heart and these toys need to be organized so that foster parents can easily select age-appropriate gifts for their children from Santa’s Closet. Every year SEHWC members assist with this toy sorting process.

Solutions for Change, a local organization that supports families experiencing homelessness and is another of SEHWC’s charities, also offers club members various volunteer opportunities, from preparing Angel Tree ornaments, to wrapping gifts, making gift baskets, and helping children shop for their parents and siblings.

If you are interested in participating in one or more of these volunteer activities, please email sehwc.ca@gmail.com for additional information.

It’s a Holiday Party and You are Invited!

Please bring a friend and one or more gift cards in any denomination from Target and/or Walmart and join in the fun at the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club’s annual Christmas party. The gift cards will help make Christmas a bit brighter for the foster children served by Straight from the Heart and you will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with friends and neighbors, as well as learn more about SEHWC and its charitable activities. All current members and interested guests are welcome to attend.

Please send an email to sehwc.ca@gmail.com to receive an invitation with specific meeting information.
