Money for Scholarships
On Tuesday evening, January 12, San Elijo Hills Women’s Club’s “auctioneer” Nikki Purcell led a spirited bidding for various items re-gifted or donated by club members and their guests. Excitement built as members attempted to outbid each other for jewelry, home decor, household, and clothing items.
Over $800 was raised for the SEHWC’s college scholarship program , which will benefit a San Marcos female high school senior who has shown an exemplary commitment to her educational goals, as well as a sense of volunteerism within her community.
Thank you Chico’s
At our January meeting, Club member, Joy Astorino, presented SEHWC president Trish Goldman with a check from Chico’s for $259, proceeds from a charity shopping event held on December 13. These monies will also benefit the scholarship program.
Women’s Empowerment (WE)
The mission of WE is to give women the tools they need to work their way out of poverty. On January 30, 2016, SEHWC members participated in a Women’s Empowerment STAR Center/IRC Tour, meeting the staff of the International Rescue Committee, visiting the farmer’s market, and enjoying lunch in the community garden. The STAR Center provides technical support, business training, and access to micro loans for refugee women in San Diego.
At a wine and cheese event hosted by Making a Difference Giving Circle on February 7, author Zohrehe Ghahremani will discuss her latest book Moon Daughter. For additional information, please contact email@example.com, attention Carol Clause.
San Elijo Hills Women’s Club — Spreading Holiday Cheer
December was a busy month for SEHWC members as they helped make the Christmas season shine brighter for children and their families. On December 18, several members volunteered at the Solutions for Change location in Vista. They filled Christmas stockings, helped organize toys donated by individuals and by community groups, and assisted parents as they selected Christmas gifts for their children from tables laden with toys and clothes. Solutions for Change addresses the root causes of homelessness, thereby transforming the lives of families and ultimately their communities. The founder of Solutions for Change will provide a program overview for SEHWC members at the April 12 meeting.
On December 16-18, SEHWC members assisted Straight from the Heart, one of the club’s major charities, with the distribution of donated toys. Foster parents were able to select from a treasure trove of toy items which were organized by age and interest level. Both of these activities helped insure that the holiday season was a merry one for some very special young people and their families.
Please Plan to Join Us!
The second month of 2016 has just begun. Have you made a New Year’s resolution to become more involved in your community? This is a perfect opportunity. The mission of San Elijo Hills Women’s Club is Women Helping Others and we have many exciting philanthropic and social plans for the year ahead.
SEHWC meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7PM. The February 9 meeting is our annual Straight from the Heart baby shower. Members and their guests are asked to bring new, unwrapped baby items such as clothing and blankets to the shower. These items will be provided to foster parents bringing babies into their homes for the first time. The director of Straight from the Heart will also be sharing heartwarming stories of the organization’s work with foster children and their families during this meeting.
