San Diego Food Bank and Family Recipe Exchange
At our August meeting, John Bode, Non-Profit Food Center and Volunteer Project Manager for the San Diego Food Bank shared with meeting attendees some of the amazing services that his organization provides to our community. You’ll find them one of the most efficient charities in San Diego County; 92 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to support the Food Bank’s many programs and services such as the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Recent Food Bank program additions target two specific groups: low income college students and families with infants and toddlers who live in poverty. Seniors, military families, and the homeless are some of the other groups that receive services from the Food Bank.
27,000 people volunteer each year to assist the Food Bank in its mission. There are three volunteer shifts each day, with shifts of two to three hours in length. Eleven years is the minimum volunteer age with supervision; those 16 and older may volunteer on their own.If you would like to volunteer with the Food Bank or make a donation, please visit sandiegofoodbank.org
Favorite family recipes were also on the agenda as SEHWC members and guests shared samples of well-loved appetizers, casseroles, vegetables, and desserts. A special treat was a demonstration by Sandee Heyman, SEHWC Board member, and her daughter Vicki Finley on how to make Krumkake, a Norwegian delicacy.
Do you have a favorite recipe or recipes that you would like to share with others? If so, please email these to firstname.lastname@example.org. Recipes will be collated into a future San Elijo Hills Women’s Club cookbook that will be available for purchase. Watch for it!

Hospice of the South Coast Is Seeking Volunteers for North County
Do you have two hours per week to offer companionship and comfort to someone nearing the end of life’s journey while also providing respite to family members caring for a loved one? If so, Hospice of the South Coast needs you! Volunteers are not required to provide hygiene, medical care or lift patients, so there are no physical limitations and medical training is not required. If interested, please contact Cindy Gilcrest at email@example.com for more information.
