AS YOU EXPLORE NEW WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH – BOTH MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY – IN THE NEW YEAR, IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO VISIT SAN MARCOS YOGA.
You have no doubt heard about the many benefits of yoga – a practice that develops and increases strength, flexibility and balance. Unlike so many other fitness and exercise ‘regimes’, yoga is a practice that is suitable for everyone. People of all ages and physical abilities can greatly benefit and it is an activity you can practice your entire life. As Kathleen Quinn, Owner of San Marcos Yoga explains,
“It is desire, not ability, that is the most important criterion for the practice of yoga.”
Beyond the physical benefits, yoga is also a metaphor for life. As you experience increased flexibility and balance in your body, you will also begin to see the same results in your daily life – improved concentration and stamina, reduced stress and increased personal productivity.
There are many styles of yoga and because its benefits have become more well-known here in the United States, classes are now popping up in gyms and studios everywhere. However, the more you learn about yoga, the more you appreciate teachers who have spent a great deal of their lives not only practicing yoga, but studying and teaching it to others.
When you take a class with someone who is truly passionate about the practice, you know it right away. This is something you will definitely experience at San Marcos Yoga – sincere, experienced and passionate instructors.
The founder of San Marcos Yoga, Kathleen Quinn, is well-known and respected not only here in San Marcos, but throughout North County. She took her first yoga class more than 30 years ago and began teaching Ashtanga yoga in 2000.
While traveling, Kathleen discovered Iyengar Yoga – a therapeutic style of yoga that uses different techniques, sequences and timing rather than a preset series of sequences. Recognizing the benefits of this style of yoga, Kathleen began studying and completed the rigorous Iyengar Yoga 3-year Teacher Training program in December of 2005.
Even today, Kathleen continues to move up the ranks as she continues to study with Senior Certified teachers from here in North County all the way to the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India.
San Marcos Yoga uses a systematic progression of poses as taught by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar. There is a specific sequencing and timing which allows each person to participate at their own level. The teacher provides verbal cues and, while you are in a class environment, each person is having their own experience and practice.
Unlike large classes you may have experienced in gyms, at San Marcos Yoga, you receive personalized attention. Teachers help you with props, modifications and adaptations that allow you to work through any obstacles. As Kathleen likes to say,
“We don’t teach classes, we teach people.”
Classes at San Marcos Yoga are offered daily and private classes and workshops are also available. The studio is fully equipped with mats, blankets, straps, blocks and other props, including a specially-designed rope wall.
Whether you’ve practiced yoga for years or you are just curious about exploring, San Marcos Yoga is the perfect place to kick-off your New Year. Not only will you find a safe, welcoming place to practice with skilled teachers, you will also find a strong sense of community as you make new connections with like-minded people in your classes.
