International Women’s Day Activities
At the March 8 meeting of the San Elijo Women’s Club (SEHWC), held on International Women’s Day, the first order of business was the presentation of a check for $450 to club member Carol Clause, proceeds from a fundraising dinner held on behalf of Women’s Empowerment (WE). One of SEHWC’s charities, WE’s mission is to provide women with the tools they need to work their way out of poverty.
Next, Tanis Brown, President of the San Marcos Historical Society, shared several fascinating stories of San Marcos women, all born in the late 1800’s, who helped shape local as well as national history. Virginia Merriam Jordan started a camp style boarding school for boys aged 8-15 out of her San Marcos home, establishing the San Marcos tradition of support for education; Frances Merriam Bailey penned articles for Audubon Magazine and was the first woman associate member of the American Ornithologist’s Union; and Sophie Hutching Cubbison, “Baker to the Stars,” created Mrs. Cubbison’s stuffing mix!
On Saturday, March 19, Tanis Brown led interested members on a tour of the San Marcos Museum and Historic homes at Heritage Park, which was followed by a no host luncheon at The Bellows Restaurant.
Welcome Social for New Members
On March 16, new SEHWC members enjoyed a Wine and Cheese Social, providing them an opportunity to meet current Board members, learn more about the club’s philanthropic and social activities, review the 2016 calendar, and receive answers to any questions they might have. These socials will be held periodically throughout the year to welcome new members.
