October 1, 2016 By Karen Friend Smith Leave a Comment

September SEHWC Meeting

Dr. Jonathan Shelton presented The A to ZZZZZ’s of Sleep at the September meeting of the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club. Attentive (and wide-awake) guests learned that sleep is intended to be a restorative process; therefore, the effects of sleep deprivation are wide-ranging, from headaches to mood disorders to poor memory, accelerated aging judgment, and recall. Dr. Shelton also explained the special needs and conditions affecting women versus men and the issues that come into play which affect sleep patterns at each stage of a woman’s life.

Sharing information on the important services provided by 2-1-1 was Claire Oksayan, Director of Enrollment Services for 2-1-1. This free and confidential resource is available 24/7 and 2-1-1 staff are able to connect members of the community with over 6,000 programs and services throughout San Diego County. While providing assistance to low-income families is a focus of 2-1-1, the service is available to all populations. Senior assistance, referrals for childcare issues, etc. are also important services of 2-1-1. In addition, 2-1-1 assists the community with disaster response, disseminating disaster information in an emergency.
