Are you a theatre lover? Do you have kids at San Elijo Middle that you’d like to introduce to theatre? Well, you don’t have to look any further than our own backyard.
The Rising Stars Program at San Elijo Middle School returns this year with their production of Seussical the Musical! You may have seen one of their previous productions, Wizard of Oz (2015), Peter Pan (2016) or Beauty and the Beast (2017).
Entering their fourth year on the SEMS campus, Rising Stars offers young people the opportunity to take part in a full scale, Broadway-style, musical production. Artistic Director, Danielle Levas, takes students through the entire process of auditioning, rehearsing to hone their acting, singing, and dance abilities, and ending with a full scale production including sets, costumes, lighting, sound, and special effects. The Peter Pan production even had characters flying above the stage! For those students who may not want to be in front of the footlights, there is also a chance to interview for a position on the backstage crew overseen by SEMS Teacher, Lori Davis.
As interest in this program has grown over time, this year Rising Stars is expanding to offer various workshops in Dance, Acting, & Stage Craft to all 6th – 8th grade students at SEMS. With each workshop lasting only 4 weeks (meeting twice weekly), classes are open to all students, regardless of experience and regardless of whether they want to be involved in the spring production. All classes are offered immediately after school on the SEMS campus for a reasonable fee. Rising Stars hopes to offer a well rounded introduction to theatre and performing arts, be it through classes, performance, or hands on technical learning.
Although auditions for Seussical have already taken place, it’s not too late to sign up for any of the upcoming workshops. To learn more about registering, email firstname.lastname@example.org or check the SEMS website under Programs > Rising Stars! Parents may also contact Patricia Kurylo, Assistant Principal for more information.
Be sure to mark your calendar to see Seussical the Musical – March 1-3 and March 9-11, 2018!
