Did you know that you can enjoy Stand Up Paddle Boarding right here in San Marcos?
It’s true. You don’t have to venture all the way to the coast to take part in this popular sport. Instead, head over to Lake San Marcos and discover what is probably one of our area’s best hidden gems.
It used to be that Lake San Marcos was for private use only by residents on the lake, but that has all changed. Lake San Marcos Marina now offers a variety of watercraft that you can rent to enjoy this beautiful little spot in San Marcos – pontoon boats, kayaks, pedal boats, water bikes and more.
Rita Root is the owner of West Coast Stand Up Paddle and leads classes right on the lake. As a resident of San Marcos, she loves that we have access to this amazing spot with an activity that all ages can enjoy.
“Every time I bring people out, they are simply in awe of the beauty,” Rita shared with us. “It’s such a great group activity. Some of my favorite classes have been multi-generations where grandparents are out paddling with their kids and their grandchildren. To see three generations all enjoying a sport together is so rewarding.”
Rita first developed her passion for paddle boarding a few years ago when a friend introduced her. She immediately fell in love with it and became obsessed learning everything she could. She noticed a lot of frustration out there with beginners, which is what inspired her to start her own business teaching others the sport. Today, she teaches at Lake San Marcos, Carlsbad Lagoon and Oceanside Harbor. Each location offers its unique benefits.
West Coast Stand Up Paddle offers classes for first timers, private SUP sessions for groups (families, girlfriends, couples, teens), as well as Stand Up Paddle Fitness classes.
“We have a lot of fun,” Rita shared. “It’s fun when you realize you can do sit ups or push ups on a paddle board. It brings a different dynamic to exercise and uses completely different muscles than you use on land.”
One of the most common misconceptions is that you have to wait for great weather to enjoy paddle boarding. The truth is that 90% of the time you aren’t even in the water. Rita recently enjoyed a paddle boarding session fully clothed in her sweat pants. So, don’t wait until summer to get out and enjoy what could become a new obsession.
