Almost two years ago, our neighbor Erin Balogh, a busy mom of three, inventor and business owner here in San Marcos, suffered from a heart attack. She was only 37 years old.
Having a heart attack at 37 is not something anyone expects. What she remembers at the time of the attack was that she was just “so tired”.
Of course, as a mom and business owner, Erin is incredibly busy. There were lots of reasons to be incredibly tired, but this was different. Erin was an ER nurse in her previous career and even as a nurse, she didn’t recognize what she was experiencing as a heart attack, as a young and otherwise healthy person, it just didn’t seem possible.
It turns out that she had a SCAD (Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection) which is a relatively rare, poorly understood acute coronary event that typically affects younger, otherwise healthy women. SCAD can cause a heart attach or even death.
Erin was lucky. After experiencing the intense fatigue and beginning to notice aches in her chest and arms, feeling restless, agitated and nauseous, she finally decided to visit the ER. She was taken into surgery and when she awoke, was told an artery in her heart had torn and they had to insert “stents” to repair the artery.
Obviously, this has been a life-changing event for this young mom. Knowing that it can recur, being on new medications, etc. all of this has been a big adjustment, but after two years, Erin is now seeking out ways to spread the word and do her part to raise awareness and contribute to research.
Erin is part of a Mayo Clinic Study as research is being conducted to better understand the cause of SCAD. She is also actively participating in an upcoming walk to raise funds for SCAD Research and would love to have your support. Please consider a donation to her team or come out and participate. You will find the details below. This is the first time a SCAD walk has been held in San Diego.
Erin is also using her own business as a way to raise funds. Erin is the founder and owner of Holster Brands. Her products are totally cool, go check them out at www.holsterbrands.com. These 100% heat resistant holsters are designed to hold curling irons, glue guns and just about anything. For SCAD, she is designing a specific holster to benefit the cause.
Until then, help spread the word about SCAD so other young women are aware of the possibility and know the importance of knowing the symptoms of a heart attack, which are so different for women than for men and can happen at any age.
