Women Helping Others

April 27, 2016 By Karen Friend Smith Leave a Comment

IMG_0915This month as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we celebrate the women in our community who are helping others. Women who see a need and step in to fill it. Women who make introductions and stir up connections between various community resources. Women who take bold actions to encourage community engagement and to give back.

Our backyard is filled with these women and you can find them everywhere you look – our schools, our clubs, our local businesses. We invite you to join us in this celebration all month long, but especially on Saturday, May 7.

You see news and updates from the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club every month in SHARE. This club started back in 2005 and while the club continues to evolve and grow each year based on the leadership and membership, one thing always stays the same within this group – a strong desire to help others.

This is, in fact, the club’s mission: “Women Helping Others”. The San Elijo HIlls Women’s Club is a group of women from in and around SEH who reach out through volunteerism and fundraising to support worthwhile charities serving women and children in the North County community.

Since its beginning in 2005, the club has raised countless funds for organizations such as Straight from the Heart, a foster family support organization based in San Marcos , as well as Women’s Empowerment, a non-profit dedicated to ending poverty with women through micro-loan programs.

For the last several years, the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club has also sponsored a high school scholarship for an exceptional female San Marcos High School student who has proven herself both academically and through her sense of volunteerism. This year, the SEHWC will present two scholarships of $1000 each to two worthy students!

The women who comprise the board and membership of the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club come from every walk of life. They are mothers, professional women, artists, teachers, medical personnel, etc. Their commonality is their desire to give back to their community and have a wonderful time doing so.

Every month, the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club sponsors a monthly meeting featuring either a speaker from one of the many charities they support or on a specific topic of interest. For instance, last year, a wine sommelier taught attendees about marrying the proper wine with your meal.

This year, SEHWC will have speakers from the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter, Casa de Amparo, a leader in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect, Solutions for Change, a unique organization that is committed to ending homelessness through very special programs, and many more. The Club will also have a fashion and wine social in June, a series of yoga classes free to members and many other social events.

To date, the club has over 60 active members. Most monthly meetings have about 25-30 members present. It’s a vibrant group of givers and a fantastic place to meet new friends while having a direct and measurable impact in our community.

The club hosted a couple of major fundraisers in the fall of 2014 and 2015 that brought in over $35,000 to Straight from the Heart. As the club has grown the last couple of years, the San Elijo Hills Foundation has graciously served as an umbrella for the club until they can form their own 501c3.

SEHWC has attracted strong supporters and sponsors, such as The Jonville Team Real Estate, and has partnered with several charities and other organizations to fund scholarships and a variety of donations – from holiday gifts to food drives and volunteer hours.

It’s amazing the impact a group of women can have when they come together with a common purpose – to help others.
